Bhutan, the Himalayan kingdom of the Thunder Dragon, prioritizes Gross National Happiness over GDP, with 72% forest cover and Vajrayana Buddhism at its core. Bordered by India and China, it spans subtropical plains to alpine peaks, with a population of ~784,000 and capital in Thimphu. History highlights unification in 1616 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and a 2008 shift to constitutional monarchy under King Jigme Khesar. Culture features tshechu festivals, archery, and spicy ema datshi cuisine; tourism requires a ~$100/day Sustainable Fee with licensed guides.

Top tour spots: Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest hike), Punakha Dzong (riverside fortress), Thimphu (Buddha statue), Phobjikha Valley (crane watching), Bumthang Valley (ancient temples), and Dochu La Pass (Himalayan views). Best visited March–May or Sept–Nov; fly into Paro for eco-conscious adventures.
